Family Knight

The Knight family can celebrate any holiday really well, but the holiday they celebrate the best is Christmas! If you’ve read all the stories, I should connect a few dots for you. The Knight family mentioned here is led by Billy Knight He is Mama Nelle’s son, Lucy Knight’s nephew and my grandmother, Grams,’ nephew. His mother and my grandmother were sisters. Billy and Betty have been married forever—over 50 years and have two grown girls and almost grown up grandchildren. Their daughters are some of my most favorite people in the whole world. Christmas at the Knight family home in Woodbury always has three main components: divinity candy, pecan logs, and a really hard puzzle. I can’t remember a Christmas at their house that was without any of these things. Billy has a fire going all the time and socializing always involves some time by the fire, watching the basketball or bowl game of the day. Several cousins work on the puzzle and switch off periodically to eat divinity and some of Betty’s pecan log.. . .

Grams' Hard Candy Collection

Grams’ Hard Candy Collection Did your grandmother have hard candy in every room of her house? Mine did. The peppermints were in the den by her chair, and the lemon drops were in her drop dresser drawer. When her bridge club visited she had special mints in the living room. To me, the best place Grams kept candy was in her purse—and especially her Sunday purse. If you have had any “raisin’” you know that the Sunday purse is different from the weekday purse. We had several preachers during my 24 year membership at Woodbury Baptist Church that would wax eloquently-- and eternally—that’s when the hard candy in Grams’ purse came in handy. On our pew, our stomachs would be roaring, with Grams’ roaring the loudest, and she’d pass the candy down the row. She had a ziplock bag with lemon drops and I’m convinced everyone in church could hear the crinkle and crackle of the bag when our hands were digging in for a lemon drop. We would have never made it all those Sundays without her candy. Grams’ Hard Candy Collection is guaranteed to help you through any church service, any preacher—no matter how longwinded---and all six verses of “Just As I Am.”

Mama Nelle's Breakfast Basket

Mama Nelle was one of my grandmother’s sisters. Mama Nelle is a legend in our family and with native Woodbury folks. My parents lived next door to her when I was little—just a baby. She died when I was two and I don’t remember her, but she is one of those people you feel like you know because of the stories you hear at every family get together. Mama Nelle was prototypical southern woman who made breakfast every morning—eggs, bacon, grits, homemade biscuits, country ham,--the whole shooting match. She was a fantastic cook. She always put the left over biscuits in a basket and put them on the kitchen counter. Since Woodbury was a town where doors were never locked, you could literally just walk in a get a biscuit. And people did this! I can’t imagine walking in anyone’s house unannounced today to “take” food and would absolutely die if anyone walked into my house unannounced. But this didn’t bother Mama Nelle at all. Mama Nelle died in 1974, but her legendary breakfast lives on in our family and in our breakfast basket. Enjoy the country ham, locally milled grits, peach preserves, biscuit mix, locally roasted coffee and mugs. You can decide if you want to leave out the leftovers and leave your doors unlocked.

Mis Frances' Bath Collection

Frances Williams was one of the first women in Woodbury I ever thought of as a real lady. I can see her now walking to town (town in Woodbury is defined as the Post Office and/or drugstore) on a warm summer day. Plenty of people walked to “town”, but what made Mis’ Frances stand out to me was that she walked to town in a dress, heels, and hose with her purse and umbrella—all from matching fabric!

Sonny and Jim's Tailgate Basket

Sonny and Jim’s Tailgate Basket It would be hard to find two bigger Bulldog fans than Sonny and Jim Moreland. While everyone knows someone who is a big UGA fan, what makes these two unique is that they are a father-son team. I don’t think Jim and Sonny have missed a Georgia home game in 30+ years and they go to almost all of the away games. For them, football is a year round sport, not something that lasts only 12 weeks. Their knowledge of Bulldog stats, info and history is unbelievable—and so are some of their road trip stories!
